Managing emergencies and disasters in general practice

Introduction

Introduction

All Australian general practices are vulnerable to an array of potentially devastating emergencies and disasters of both natural and manmade origin. Prevention and preparedness are key in achieving the best possible outcomes for your business, team members and community.

This guide exists to assist you and your practice team in:

  • determining the scope and diversity of events that may affect your practice,
  • understanding the potential serious business implications, including financial impacts, of an event,
  • developing, or further improving, your emergency response plan, and
  • preparing for, responding to and recovering from the impacts of emergencies and disasters.

While not always possible, the optimal aim is for your practice to stay operational before, during and after an event so that you can continue to provide essential healthcare to those in need.

The emergency planning process is fluid and ongoing. Any emergency response plan developed should be perceived as a working document that requires regular practice, review and updates as circumstances within your practice change.
