RACGP Queensland Faculty ±«ÓãÊÓƵ Committee presents: There and then surgery: simple skin procedures within the GP consultation

Presented by Dr Jim Muir, this webinar will focus on identifying dermatological conditions that require further investigations using a range of diagnostic skills. Key elements of a range of biopsies that GPs can perform (punch, shave, curette, cautery) will be covered to ensure the most important skills and procedures are available in every GP’s toolkit. At the end of this webinar, GPs will be able to review and summarise the steps in managing low-risk skin malignancies using a range of clinical procedures that have significant efficacy.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate appropriate patient-doctor communication and consent prior to the performance of any skin procedure, as well as recognising and communicating aftercare processes with patients.
  2. Identify, describe and perform dermatological investigations, such as Punch biopsy, Shave biopsy, Shave excision, Curettage, and Cautery.

Dr Jim Muir

Dr Jim Muir is a life-long resident of Brisbane who qualified as a specialist dermatologist in 1994. Besides practicing at South East Dermatology he is the Director of the Department of Dermatology at the Mater Hospital, South Brisbane. As the dermatologist for ‘Telederm National’, a website run by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, Jim also delivers dermatological care to all parts of Australia via the internet. Jim has a special interest in skin cancer and skin disease in the elderly. He is actively involved in medical education; he regularly lectures on dermatology to other specialists, general practitioners, medical students, pharmacists and the general public.Jim is also a senior lecturer in dermatology at the University of Queensland, a moderator of the International Dermoscopy Society, Chair of the Brisbane Hospitals Dermatology Group and has for many years been involved in the provision of dermatology education to the Department of Podiatry at the Queensland University of Technology.
